Workshop – Appropriate Housing

Overview

Students will learn about the concept of appropriate design through the context of floating village communities residing on the Tonlé Sap Lake in Cambodia. Students will discuss some of the challenges of this type of living before designing and building their own floating house to hold marbles. The designs are tested in a tub of water.


Venue/Classroom Requirements

  • Tables – set up for groups of 4-8 students
  • Garden hose or large sink to fill plastic tub for design testing
  • Projector for PowerPoint presentation (if possible: the workshop can be run without a projector if required)


Workshop Length

  • Ideal: 60-90 minutes
  • Minimum: 40 minutes
  • Maximum: 120 minutes


Number of Students

  • Ideal: 20-30 students
  • Minimum: 5 students
  • Maximum: 50 students
